Hvarna is a music project formed in 2008 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The project is based on songs and tunes of the Belarusian Kryviai, Finno-Ugric peoples, and Russian North, combined with improvisational playing and vocal techniques. The sound of Hvarna can be defined as a space between ethno ambient and dark wave. The uniqueness of the group lies in the combination of two sacred, priestly instruments and traditions: the Kryviai duda and Russian gusli. The album 'Kola Viartanniau' is a mature and complete work that consists of 11 compositions, including songs and melodies from different regions of Kryviai. The instruments used by the musicians include gusli, kantele, Kryviai duda, flutes, charot, vargan, buben, hulusi, kalyuka, svirel, zhaleyka, okarina, karataly, sharhuny, hmar, and keyboards.
